How Technology is teaching Millennials to take better notes

One of the most difficult tasks in school is note taking. Effective note taking keeps a precise record of a class lecture and will help you understand the information more efficiently. Digitizing your notes will help you to browse, search and review your information quickly. The significance of note taking has increased with the rise of technology. Tools such as digital notebooks and scanners are effective ways you can save your information on to a word processing document or online to an external location such as Google Drive.

Recently one of my friends told me about a hand scanner called the Scanmarker Air. This device works with Windows, Mac and Android (computer, laptop, tablet, mobile) devices and connects via Bluetooth or USB.  Small enough to tuck into a back pack, this device can be taken out in class or in the library and has a scan rate of 3000 characters per minute. Instead of photocopying or printing out pages of documents, you can simply scan the text directly into a word document or email.  It also has an extremely cool feature that will read what you are scanning aloud in real-time. The device works for both left handed and right handed users and the battery life is about a full day (7 hours).

Scanmaker indicates the Scanmarker Air can translate documents up to 40 different languages, however I would dissuade you from using it to directly translate your essays or assignments as it leverages machine translation (ie read the online British Medical Journal on the accuracy of Google Translate for more information). The advantage of using the Scanmarker Air for digital notes are many including: you can never loose your online notes, easier to organize and of course you can save the environment instead of using paper.

The fundamentals of note taking have not changed for students. But new technology has evolved how notes are captured, shared, and further accessed.
