Why SSDs are Big Technology

Advances in computing technology are promising to transform the way Consumers work.

If you have purchased a laptop or desktop over the last few years, most likely you have purchased a Solid-State Drive (SSD). Prior to this, traditional computing devices used the older hard disk drive (HDD) “nonvolatile” storage based technology.  The history of hard drives is probably as old as the first computer introduced by IBM in 1956. Hard drives were disks that spun around and wrote code into a magnetic coating that preserved the data.

In contrast, SSDs rely on semiconductor chips, not magnetic media, to store data. The primary benefit of an SSD is that this waiting time is dramatically reduced, even on cheaper drives, when compared to HDD. Anything you load on it will perform actions much quicker. The main disadvantages of SSDs were limited storage capacity and availability. That was until today.

Korean based SK hynix  have taken SSD’s to the next level. Today they announced the launch of its Gold S31 Solid-State Drive (SSD). Gold S31 is the first of the Company’s new SuperCore series of consumer SSDs, an internal drive lineup based on SK hynix’s core technology.

The 2.5-inch drive supports the SATA III interface based on 3D NAND Flash technology, and is now available in 1TB, 500GB and 250GB capacities on Amazon U.S. All key components in Gold S31, from NAND Flash and built-in controller to DRAM and firmware, were designed and produced by SK hynix. The in-house components are built for robust performance and reliability.

The launch of SK hynix ‘s Gold S31 with Amazon U.S. will be a meaningful opportunity to expand the experience of SK hynix’s SSDs to consumers.
