Be the Master of your Sleep

Good morning, how did you sleep? With March 18th being World Sleep Day we can all reflect on our nightly slumber.

It is believed that almost one third of adults suffer from chronic insomnia and  between 30% and 48% of older adults suffering from insomnia. These numbers are not insignificant as we know that a good night’s sleep helps to rejuvenate and re-energize the body to recover and wake up refreshed and ready to take on the day.

40% of people with insomnia are believed to also be affected by a mental health disorder and approximately 75% of adults with depression suffer from insomnia.

Tech that will put you to Sleep

In recognition of how important sleep is, our friends at the health innovator Withings today launched the Sleep Diary. In combination with the Withings Sleep mat this tool is designed to deliver the data users and doctors need to help people optimize their sleep.

Withings Sleep monitors the intensity of breathing disturbances, thanks to an algorithm that analyzes interruptions in breathing patterns that occur during the night.

Paired with the Withings Sleep , the Withings Sleep Diary combines the automatic collection of sleep data with behavioural analysis based on gold standard sleep disorder medical questionnaires, including the Ep worth Sleepiness Scale and STOP-Bang Questionnaire. It then generates an easy to use and standardized dashboard that users can quickly interpret, track over time, and share with their physician as a PDF.

Although, the STOP-Bang Questionnaire is a widely used screening tool for obstructive sleep apnea. Neither questionnaire nor sleep diary can be used diagnose a person with a specific sleeping disorder.  However Withings is hoping this tech will empower consumers to make the right decisions for their health.
