Looking to track the Highs and Lows of Blood Pressure

January is National Blood Donor Month.

From people who are undergoing cancer treatment to those who have blood diseases like Sickle Cell, blood transfusions are a lifeline. The history of blood transfusions dates back to the 17th century. The first known blood transfusion was attempted in 1667 by Jean-Baptiste Denis in France and Richard Lower and Edmund King in England. However, since this time, blood transfusions have been a transformative way to save people’s lives.

The world’s first cuffless blood pressure monitor

Blood pressure and blood transfusions are related in the sense that blood transfusions can help restore blood volume and blood pressure in patients who have lost significant amounts of blood due to injury, surgery, or other medical conditions

At CES 2023, Valencell presented what it says is the world’s first cuffless blood pressure monitor. The company’s first product candidate is the Fingertip™ Blood Pressure Monitor, focused on helping people spot-check measure BP and manage hypertension by combining an intuitive app with an innovative over-the-counter device to accurately measure blood pressure (BP) from the finger without a cuff or calibration.

The device is small and black, has a built-in screen that shows diastolic and systolic results, and connects to an app on your phone via Bluetooth.  The device takes one minute to measure blood pressure, and the numbers are easily visible on the device and on the mobile app

PPG Sensors with AI

You may ask, how does it work? Photoplethysmography (PPG) sensors within the device use reflected light to measure blood flow patterns. Valencell’s proprietary AI algorithms will process this information in combination with the physical characteristics (age, weight, biological sex, height) to calculate a blood pressure measurement.

The Valencell mobile App tracks and stores readings. Users can view friends and track historical data. Additionally, users can set reminders to take blood pressure measurements and share their data confidentially with their health provider.

The device is pending FDA approval but Valencell is expecting clearance in late 2023.
