Has video conferencing reduced the impact of Eye Contact?
Over the last few years, video conferencing has exploded as a result of the pandemic. Whether it professional or personal, the use of video platforms has increased in popularity. Unfortunately progress in this communication technology has provided people with challenges. One of the difficulties of video conferencing is the ability to make eye contact over the communication medium.
Eye contact is deeply important for humans. According to Carol Kinsey Goman, Ph.D. esteemed researcher in non verbal communication, “Eye contact is so powerful a force because it is connected with humans’ earliest survival patterns.. eye contact produces a powerful, subconscious sense of connection” (source Linkedin)
Eye contact in a video call is different and somewhat less intimate than in person. In a video meeting, you maintain eye contact by looking into the camera.
Behind-display transparent camera tech
However, there is good news for consumers. American tech innovator Veeo has developed a game-changer in the world of remote collaboration. Veeo is looking to bring a more natural approach to video conferencing. Taking consumers back to a new era of seeing eye-to-eye, with three new Veeo Holodeck products.
In partnership with LG, Veeo has designed a transparent OLED display. With the presenter facing that display and a high-quality video camera behind the display facing the presenter, direct eye contact becomes unavoidable. The Veeo Holodeck solves the two biggest problems of virtual communication, delivering a genuine face-to-face connection while allowing for seamless collaboration on digital content.
The Veeo Holodeck brings consumers one step closer to recreating the in-person meeting experience where users can look at each other in the eye.
Holodeck M-series Veeo presentaon staons are sleek, slender enclosed devices with a 30” transparent-OLED screen, a high-def camera, infrared-based touch sensing, a purpose-designed processor and other electronics. Presenters can take advantage of interacvity by using the same familiar mul-touch paterns as tablets and smart phones. Beyond virtual meeng use in, for example, Zoom, Teams, Meet, Webex or Skype, a Veeo Holodeck M30 offers an ideal originaon staon for training, telemedicine, deposions, negoaons and more.
According to Veeo CEO Ji Shen, “Eye contact is well-established as being important in nonverbal communication. But when the communicatons have computers in the middle, it’s electronically impossible to put a webcam in the center of the display, and if the camera isn’t centered, it’s geometrically impossible to center eye contact on the camera.”
