For the Smart Home its all about the Cloud

On the socio-cultural evolution path of humanity, we have evolved to become highly connected digitally. By 2020 according to Statista, there will be around 6.58 connected devices per person. When you dig deep into this number with computers, phones, home cameras, tablets, smart appliances, door cameras, smart thermostats, wearables etc. perhaps this number may be too conservative. With a population over 7.5 billion people, that would equate to over 50 billion network connected devices on the planet.

Each one of these IoT connected devices, connect to the network to provide information they gather from their sensors.  With  50 billion devices, that translates to a significant amount of data being collected. Whether it be your mobile phone (contacts, emails, photos) or home security (videos) or health (wearables with personal health stats), there is a substantial amount of this data that is being stored on public clouds.  Given the heightened publicity of data breaches and ransomware campaigns have led many to explore alternatives to public clouds. And beyond the security risks, the concerns of vendors extracting, sharing and selling personal data has heightened the concerns for data privacy.

Private Cloud for the Connected Home

The search for alternatives have led many to private storage. At IFA 2019, cloud experts Amber have unveiled a smart storage platform for consumers amalgamating the convenience of cloud storage without having the exposure of data privacy breaches.

Amber allows users to easily backup, protect and organise digital data on-premise with the ability to securely access remotely via the world’s first Personal Hybrid Cloud. Available in two options, Amber One (1x2TB) and Amber Plus (2x2TB) these personal cloud storage devices provide individuals full control, security and ownership of their data along with easy-to-use features and multi-layer protection. Amber will enable you to back up all of your IoT connected devices and features dual mirrored HDD storage to reduce the risk of data loss.

Amber also has some transformative technology features including:

  • AI-powered facial recognition technology that indexes photos and video for easy search and sharing
  • A built-in MIMO router that maximizes Wi-Fi speeds
  • Automatically save any new images or videos from iOS and Android devices
